Contact Lenses for Children… Are you OK with that? Reply

kids and contact lenses

When fitting contact lenses in children, how much consideration do you put on the psychological impact?  There is plenty of research to show that myopic children, wearing contact lenses, have a more positive outlook on their physical appearance, athletic and social skills1.  While the psychological advantages would never trump health concerns it is something we cannot overlook.

What options are available in the Toric 1-Day Modality? Reply

Dailies Aqua Comfort Plus Toric

(See the Video Here:  Video Quick Tip)

So your patient has astigmatism and wants to dispose of their lenses daily.  What do you do?  As contact lens fitters, we are fortunate to practice in a time when our options are ever increasing.  It used to be that when patients presented with astigmatism we had very few soft lens designs to offer outside of a custom made-to-order lens.  The recent release of Alcon’s Dailies Aqua Comfort Plus Toric option demonstrates how far we have come, not only in parameters but in modalities.

Rub vs. No Rub – How Do We Properly Use Contact Lens Solution? 1

No Rub Contact Lens Solution

It wasn’t that long ago that manufacturers were claiming that their solutions were effective enough that they did not require rubbing.  Whether this was a marketing claim for convenience, or it was an attempt for the contact lens user to go through their supply quicker, this was a habit clearly embraced by many contact lens wearers.

Who Is At Fault? FDA Panel Deliberates Whether Contact Lens Users Should Be Given New Guidelines 1

FDA

Are your patients “behaving” themselves?  It is estimated that about 80% of the problems caused from wearing contacts are the result of patients going rogue; that is, not following the clear directions they are given. When it comes to contact lens solutions, this is especially the case. Patients regularly use solutions much longer than recommended, and sometimes even use tap water.  So who should be responsible when patients disregard our recommendations and follow their own guidelines?  The Ophthalmic Devices Panel, which is part of the FDA Medical Devices Advisory Committee, does not believe that the industry should be held accountable when contact users ignore instructions.

Contact Lenses and Ultraviolet Light: Are You Protected? Reply

Ultraviolet Radiation

How harmful is ultraviolet light? From the perspective of an eye care professional, excessive exposure to this form of radiation can have serious effects on ocular surface1.  Known as photokeratitis, or ultraviolet keratitis, this painful eye condition can result in a compromised corneal epithelium, inflammation, edema and decreased acuity3.

Symptoms secondary to ultraviolet exposure are evident when an eye is insufficiently protected from ultraviolet rays.  While this condition is mostly seen in extreme cases, it is always important to be cognizant of our corneas exposure to this potentially harmful radiation. Read more

Electronic Contact Lenses for Presbyopia Reply

Multifocal Contact Lenses

Contact lens designs have come a long way.  This is certainly the case when we are talking about presbyopia.  But despite all of our advances, a multifocal fit can still be quite challenging.   An understanding of lens mechanics quickly demonstrates why we find ourselves in these fitting situations. Inevitably we are often left sacrificing  a little distance or a little near acuity.  Whether referencing diffractive, aspheric, concentric or alternating designs, our limitations have everything to do with the physical properties of lens. Contact Lens Case Hygiene – Time To Have The Discussion Reply

Proper cleaning of a Contact Lens Case

In an ideal world, most of our patients would wear daily lenses.  But the truth of the matter is that a big section of our patients rely on the advantages of planned replacement lenses.  For this reason, as contact lens fitters, a large portion of our exam is naturally allocated to lens care and hygiene.  In discussing contact lens care, how often do we actually address the contact lens case?  Did you know that a large portion of microbial contaminations can be linked back to the contact lens case? Let’s talk allergies.  Do you think this is a big or small issue?

Did you know that nearly 50 million Americans suffer from perennial or seasonal allergies?  That is a HUGE part of the population suffering from this allergic disease.
